Don’t peel those apples! Apple peel contains quercetin and scientists have found that quercetin, in combination with dasatinib, a leukaemia drug, lengthens the lives of old mice by one third. In human terms, that would be an extra 40 years. And the scientists know why. When we hit sixty, some old cells in our bodies refuse to die and this causes all sorts of problems. The same is true in mice. Young mice injected with such old cells become artificially aged, a process that is reversed when they are treated with quercetin and dasatinib. These two drugs destroy the old cells by forcing them to die naturally and so extending the life of the mice. Nature Medicine, doi.org/crv9
